Dynamic Nuclear Polarization

Dynamic Nuclear Polarization (DNP) results from the transfer of spin polarization from electrons to nuclei by Overhauser effect in solution, solid effect with mixing of spin-states and spontaneous cross-relaxation/thermal mixing. The latter is the dominant mechanism for observing DNP signal at high field. The polarization of the electrons can be enhanced by continuous microwave irradiation with energy at EPR frequencies. Significant sensitivity gains are expected from DNP enhancements in solid state NMR experiments with applications in biological solids and materials science.
